Ambode promises ‘special’ Lagos City Marathon
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, at the weekend promised that the forthcoming second edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon would be special.
Declaring that the state would use the long distance athletics event to boost its economy and its image as one of the best cities in the world, Ambode stressed that the biggest marathon events in the world were being staged in glamorous cities with rich history.
“There is New York City Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Paris Marathon, London Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Osaka Marathon. These are great cities and the target is to have Lagos mention along with great marathon cities,” he said.
He expressed delight over the current ranking, which rated the Lagos City marathon as number two in Africa and 71st in the world.
“After only the first edition, we are happy to have been rated high. This time, I will be in charge of all the logistics to ensure everything go well for us,” he added.
The marathon is holding the same year Lagos will be marking its 50 years as a state in Nigeria and “we are not taking this as mere coincidence… we are beginning the 50th-anniversary celebration with the marathon. Everything will just be special,” Ambode promised.
