Former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi was among the highlights of the 2026 Mainland Summer Camp organised by Springsoca United Academy, as the Nigerian football legend spent time with young players, participated in coaching sessions and shared lessons from his career with aspiring footballers.

The programme, held from August 10 to 15 at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, brought together young footballers for a week of football training, competitive activities, mentorship and interaction with experienced figures in the game.

The 2026 edition, themed “Legends Meet Future Stars 2.0,” marked another chapter in the development of the Mainland Summer Camp, an initiative of Springsoca United Academy that has provided young players with opportunities to improve their football skills while learning from established professionals.

Amokachi, popularly known as “The Bull”, served as the camp ambassador and was actively involved in the programme. He interacted with the participants, took part in coaching activities and spoke to the young footballers about the demands of pursuing a career in football.

During his interaction with the players, the former Nigeria international stressed the importance of discipline, diligence, dedication and consistency in the development of young footballers. He also expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the commitment shown by the participants throughout the programme.

Speaking on the significance of the camp, Emmanuel Oladapo, Sporting Director of Springsoca United, said the academy’s objective was to create an environment where young players could develop their football abilities while also learning important values that would help them both on and off the pitch.

“Our objective is not only to train footballers, but to develop young people who understand what it takes to progress in the game. The opportunity to interact with someone of Daniel Amokachi’s experience gives the players a different perspective on the demands of professional football. We want them to understand that talent must be supported by discipline, hard work, character and a willingness to learn.”

Oladapo added that the academy would continue to use the camp and similar development programmes to expose young players to experienced professionals and create a structured pathway for those seeking to progress in football.

Amokachi’s message to the next generation

Amokachi brought considerable experience to the camp, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career in Nigeria and Europe.

He rose to prominence with Ranchers Bees before moving to Belgian club, Club Brugge and subsequently playing for Everton in England and Beşiktaş in Turkey. He was part of the Nigeria team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and represented the country at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where he scored against Bulgaria in Nigeria’s memorable 3–0 victory.

He was also a member of Nigeria’s historic team that won the 1996 Olympic football gold medal in Atlanta, scoring in the final against Argentina as the Super Eagles came from behind to win 3–2.

It was this experience at the highest level of international football that Amokachi brought to his interaction with the young players at the Springsoca camp.

Rather than limiting his role to a ceremonial appearance, the former striker was directly involved with the participants, using the training environment to share practical lessons and encourage the youngsters to approach their development with seriousness.

His emphasis on discipline was particularly significant, with Amokachi reminding the young footballers that talent alone is not sufficient to sustain a professional career. He urged them to remain committed to their training and personal development.

The camp opened on Monday, August 10, with participants undergoing structured football sessions designed to improve their technical and tactical abilities.

The opening day featured technical drills, tactical instruction, physical development and interactive activities, with coaches placing emphasis on ball control, passing, movement, coordination, decision-making and football intelligence. Teamwork, communication and discipline were also incorporated into the sessions.

As the week progressed, the players took part in competitive activities while continuing their technical development under the academy’s coaching team.

Coach Chinenye Ashiegbu subsequently praised the players for their attitude, progress and willingness to respond to instructions during the camp, noting that the programme was intended to develop not only football ability but also discipline, teamwork and character.

The involvement of Amokachi provided an additional mentorship dimension to the technical programme, giving the young players an opportunity to interact directly with a footballer whose career included the World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic Games.

The programme concluded on Saturday, August 15, with the finals and closing activities.

At the conclusion of the camp, Amokachi presented certificates to the participating players, while participants were also presented with medals in recognition of their involvement in the programme.

The closing ceremony brought together the young players, coaches and other members of the Springsoca United Academy community following six days of football activities and mentorship.

The presentation of certificates provided a formal conclusion to the camp while recognising the players who had completed the programme.

A growing tradition

The 2026 edition continued a tradition established by Springsoca United Academy of bringing notable Nigerian football personalities into its youth development programmes.

The Mainland Summer Camp traces its origins to 2019, when it was initially organised as the Summer Camp with Etebo. The maiden edition combined a sports conference with a week-long football training programme and featured Super Eagles players including Oghenekaro Etebo, Victor Osimhen and John Ogu.

The initiative subsequently developed into the Mainland Summer Camp, with former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze featuring at the 2025 edition. The 2025 programme attracted more than 150 young players and combined technical training, fitness sessions and mentorship.

The progression from Etebo, Osimhen and Ogu in the early edition, to Udeze in 2025 and Amokachi in 2026, has given the camp a distinctive mentorship component within Springsoca United Academy’s broader youth development activities.

Established in 2015, Springsoca United Academy operates from the NIS Training Pitch at the National Stadium in Surulere and focuses on structured football development for young players, combining football training with character development and longer-term player pathways.

With the 2026 edition now concluded, the Mainland Summer Camp has added another chapter to that development programme, with Amokachi’s participation providing the young footballers with both practical coaching and first-hand lessons from one of Nigeria’s most accomplished footballers.
