Amstel Malta Ultra rewards Run for Coal City winners with cash, other prizes

Sponsors of the Enugu ‘Run for the Coal City’ 20km race held on Independence Day, October 1, Amstel Malta Ultra, have rewarded winners in the competition with various cash prizes and other items.

Flagging off the Ultra marathon, which the sponsors organised in conjunction with Enugu State Ministry of Sports, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Manfred Nzekwe, said the essence of the marathon is to support healthy living and fitness.

The race commenced at Okpara Square and covered 11 vantage points up to Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium gate.

The participants were given colour-coded wristbands at every point to ensure that they followed the mapped route exactly.

Chinecherem Kingsley Onyia won the race to get the N500, 000 grand prize in the men’s category. He was followed by Okechukwu Donatus and Egu Kenechi, who got N250, 000 and N150, 000 respectively.

In the women category, Lagos-based 20-year-old, Afigbo Esther, came first place, with 35-year-old Helen Mammah from Abuja and 14-year-old Patience Joseph from Imo State in second and third positions respectively.

They won N500, 000, N250, 000 and N150, 000 respectively.

Speaking after collecting his winning prize, an excited Chinecherem Kingsley Onyia said: “I am so happy and excited that I got to compete and win. I am especially grateful to Amstel Malta Ultra and the Enugu State government for organising this competition.”

Also expressing her delight, winner of the women category, Esther, said: “‘I feel great. I am grateful to Amstel Malta Ultra for organising this competition as it is a great way to help the youths.”

Also speaking on the competition, Senior Marketing Manager, Amstel Malta, Chidi Egwu, said: “This is the beginning of new things for the people of Enugu.

“Amstel Malta is a brand that encourages people to choose the best way to live and will continue to support the good people of Enugu State in their journey to a healthy and better living.”

He expressed his delight at the turn out of athletes and spectators, saying, “Seeing many promising talents, both in the men and women categories is encouraging. It was a fantastic outing, the first for Amstel Malta in Enugu.”

In addition to the cash prizes won by the first three finishers in both categories, participants, who finished the race in fourth to 20th positions, were also rewarded with N10, 000 each.

The Ultra Race was the second event in a three-week long fitness campaign, which began on September 24 and ended on October 8 in the Coal City.
