THE President of the Jibowu High School, Lagos, Old Alumni Association, Tosin Quadri, has called on the government, private sector operators and sundry stakeholders to make available opportunities for talented students to hone their skills in sports.

Quadri, who said that sports has become a great avenue for children from poor homes to extricate their families from poverty, regretted that many talented students have been allowed to waste because they did not receive the needed support while they were in school.

Speaking at the school’s yearly inter-house sports competition held at the Nigerian Army Sports Centre, Morocco, Igbobi, at the weekend, Quadri commended the students for displaying uncommon talents and enthusiasm. He said: “Not every student is academically brilliant, but every student has a talent that can be expressed in other areas, such as sports.

“We have seen that given the right environment, some of these students can grow to become great athletes. We will continue to support their development, both in academics and sports.”

He said the alumni association played a significant role in organising the event, and plans to continue supporting the school’s sporting activities.

“We are trying to provide them with other sporting facilities, which they can use to practice and express themselves,” Quadri said.

Red House dominated the field at the sports competition, which featured march pass, 100m, 200m, 400m races, relay races, egg and sack races, as well as teachers’ and parents’ races.

Green House took the top spot in the march past; Blue House dominated the 400 metres junior event, while Red House excelled in the 200 metres race.

Red House came tops in the overall standing, with Green House in second position, while Blue House finished in third position.

Apart from winning the competition, Red House athletes won individual awards like the most valuable athlete, among others.
