Caren, Osobajo applaud participants at Lagos Women Run 2019


The Lagos 10km Women Run drew participants from across the world to the streets of Lagos.

Impressed by what is best described as a show of resilience, passion and determination by participants at the 2019 Lagos Women Run, winner of the race, Kenya’s Kenya’s Cheptoeck and leading gaming company in Nigeria, Bet9ja have commended athletes, sports enthusiasts, organisers and the Lagos State government for their commitment to making the marathon a world class initiative aimed at supporting the female gender to find fulfilment and achieve purpose.

Careen and an officer of Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Bayelsa State Command, Genevieve Njoku, won the Open and Veteran categories at the event held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos State.

The race, which was flagged off by the wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, began at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan, eventually saw Careen winning the Women’s Open in record time of 28:55 to clinch first place, while Nigeria’s Deborah Pam came second in 31:05, as Elizabeth Nuhu Power finished third in 31: 52.

The excitement of the race also extended to the veteran race ages 45 to 70, where Njoku triumphed in 43:03 to come first, while Ann Seriki was second in 45:19, as Bolanle Karim emerged third in a time of 46:30.

Speaking on her achievement, a delighted Careen, said, “I am happy with the race and the organisation. It was not easy winning because the weather was very hot. But I thank God I won it.”

On her part the winner of the Veteran, Njoku said, the race was fun aside from the health benefit. “I am very happy to win the Veteran race. I have been running when I was younger and now that I am older, it has been fun.”

Also speaking on the occasion, the Senior Marketing Manager, Bet9ja, Femi Osobajo, said, “We are pleased with the Lagos Women Run initiative that aligns with our strategic objective of empowering people and enhancing their livelihood through our operations.”Osobajo described the Lagos Women Run as is a good platform for Bet9ja to support the female gender as part of the company’s overall commitment to enhance the development of sports in Nigeria by complementing government’s efforts in that regard.
