Cross River draw first blood, grab three gold medals

Bayelsa, Oyo, Ekiti also on medals’ list
Team Cross River has taken the front row on the medals table, grabbing three gold medals in the weightlifting event at the 22nd National Sports Festival, which started on Sunday.

While the Games’ opening ceremony was going on at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, the Abeokuta Sports Centre was busy with the weightlifting events.

In the 54kg male event, King Kalu Ufiem lived up to his name by picking the three gold medals available in the snatch, clean and jerk, and Total event. While Cross River State celebrated the night with three gold medals, Nnadozie Elvis Elechi put Team Bayelsa on the medals table, picking two silver medals and a bronze medal.

Team Oyo got one silver medal, just as Team Ekiti grabbed one bronze medal.

Meanwhile, the female hockey match between Team Delta and Plateau State at Ijebu-Ode stadium could not hold, yesterday as earlier scheduled. It will hold today at the same venue.

The Guardian learnt that the postponement was as a result of some logistics from the technical crew of the hockey federation.
