Delta Queens emerge champions of Grassroots Miss amnesty basketball tournament

Delta Queens have emerged winners of the 4th edition of the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports competitions tagged: Miss Amnesty Nigeria Basketball Championship by defeating Divine Speed Academy Warri by 30–14.

The 4th edition of the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports tagged: Miss Amnesty Nigeria Basketball Championship will go down as a memorable one as the sponsors express determination and commitment to continue sponsoring the programme.

The exciting final event for 2025 came to a conclusion on Sunday, as Delta Queens Asaba emerged the winner of the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports was sponsored by Tracy Macwary Foundation and was held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba on Sunday.

The basketball championship saw the best basketball teams from across Nigeria competing for honours.

This edition highlighted the impact of the championship, which had helped shape the lives of girl child through sports.

This latest victory cemented Delta Queens position as one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history.

In the Semi finals, Discover Academy Warri, defeated Bayelsa Queens by 24-23 .

Ms Tracy Mcwary of Tracy Mcwary Foundation said that the participants embodied a spirit of competition that the championship fosters.

“To every player, coaches, and supporters, your journey here is a testament to your hard work and commitment. I congratulate everyone,” she said.

She also commended them for their dedication to nurturing young talents.

Mcwary reaffirmed the purpose behind the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports as an empowerment initiative to lift women off the streets and also encourage women to be productive in the society.

“The Tracy Mcwary Foundation is giving back to the society and the championship programme will also encourage the young girls and also give them hope and a sense of belonging in the society.

“The effort is to discover their strength, showcase their talent, and unlock their full potential. We are not just crowning new champions, we are marking our four years of transformation, purpose, and impact,” Mcwary said.

According to her, through sports, skills such as understanding and managing emotions and behaviours, solving personal and interpersonal problems, building healthy coping strategies, and developing self-esteem and confidence.

“This will help the the girl child cope with difficulties and build positive relationships, increasing their resilience so that they are better able to deal with life’s challenges,” she said.

The Head Coach of Delta Queens, Benson Aikoroje told NAN that the game was a very tough one, those girls we played against they are always our rivals, though we have more experience than them.

“We are grateful to the Tracy Mcwary Foundation for organising this competition and hope to see more of it in the future.

“Our next plan is to regroup, work harder, and showcase our talents to the fullest when the next opportunity arises.

“To the teams that lost today, don’t lose hope, keep working, and you will become champions one day,” he said.

All the winners were given cash prize 5th and 6th position went home with N250, 000, while the 4th position had N300,000, the 3rd position had N500,000.

Also, the 2nd position had 1 million naira while the first position went home with 1.5 million naira.

NAN also report that Tambou Ediseyi won the most valuable player and was crowned Miss Amnesty Nigeria.
