After losing their first match of the 2025 Nigeria Women Premier Football League (NWFL), former champion, Delta Queens FC of Asaba have promised to make amends next week.
The coach Peter Dedevbo-led Delta Queens lost 1-0 to host Bayelsa Queens through a late goal scored by Sefiat Idris in the 94th minute on Wednesday. Speaking with The Guardian shortly after arriving in Asaba yesterday, the coach said: “Our girls did well just that they lost concentration in the dying minutes. I am confident we can make amends soon.”
Also speaking, Delta Queens General Manager, Joy Oyibo said: “We have put behind the defeat to Bayelsa Queens and our focus now is our next match against Honey Baggers FC of Benue State next week in Asaba” Edo Queens of Benin and Robo Queens began their season by shredding their opponents 5-0 and 5-1 respectively.
In the official opening match of the 2025 season played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the defending Champion, Edo Queens, won 5-0 with two of the goals scored before the 35th minute to lay the marker and unveiling their intention for the season by extension.
Miracle Usani opened scores in the 29th minute before Emem Essien doubled the lead in the 34th minute to end the first half on a positive note. Three more goals in the second half ensured that the team started on a flying note as Goodness Osigwe, Loveth Edeh and Kafayah Mafisere hit the back of the net in the 50th, 58th and 78th minute respectively to take the game beyond the visitors.
New comers, Benue Queens, faced the baptism of fire of playing in the league as Robo Queens of Lagos ran riot. The Queens from Benue opened the scoring in the first minute of the encounter through Favour Nkwocha, but Robo Queens responded with five goals afterwards.
Tosin Rafiu restored parity for the Lagos based team, in the 9th minute before Anastasia Emefo put Robo Queens ahead in the 24th from the penalty spot. Kemi Agbegbuyi and Mariam Yahaya took their turn of goals before Rabiu, who opened scoring for Robo Queens added another in the 64th minute to register a brace in the match.
In other results of the opening day, Nasarawa Amazons defeated Dannaz FC by 1-0 at the Lafia Stadium while the same scoreline was recorded in the game between Ekiti Queens and Heartland at Ado Ekiti. The home team emerged winners. Remo Stars Ladies were at their clinical best against the Confluence Queen at Anyigba by defeating the home team 3-1, securing all three points away from home.
Rivers Angels also started the season on a winning note by outscoring Ibom Angels by 2-1.
