Delta State’s Odibo, Nigerian Army’s Olojede qualify for quarterfinals
Delta State boxer, Odibo Stephen, yesterday qualified for the quarterfinals of the on-going Kenneth Minimah National Men and Women Open Boxing Championship when he knocked out Oliwo Kazeem of Lagos State in round one of their three-round bout.
A deadly upper-cut delivered in the early seconds of the first round confirmed Odibo’s supremacy over Kazeem in the first bout of day two of the week-long championship.
Also through to today’s quarterfinals are Tunde Olojede of the Nigeria Army, who defeated his Kaduna State opponent, Kabiru Oladejo, 2 -1 in their second round bout, just as Borno State’s pugilist, Rotimi Abayomi outpunched M. Onyemachi of Abia State to advance to the quarterfinals.
Fighting in the blue corner, Kazeem Oseliu of Ogun State beat Adesola Abiodun of Adamawa State 3-0 in their 56kg weight category clash to also move to the quarterfinals.
Another Technical knockout specialist, Fatai Sikiru of the Nigeria Police, who fought in the blue corner, Stopped Ismaila Ajibola from Adamawa State in round two of their three rounds bout, while Sanusi Abiodun of Civil Defence Corps gained a technical knockout over Sherif Ogubanjo of Oyo State in round one to also move on.
Imo State fighter, Rasheed Adeniran was no match to 19-year-old Olayinka Yusuf of Oyo State, who turned him into a punching bag before dismissing him 3-0 to book a deserved quarterfinal ticket.
It would be recalled that Olayinka Yusuf was part of the Nigerian team to the 2013 World Junior Championship in Kazakhstan.
Action in the maiden Minimah Boxing Championship continues today.
