Await Final Day Fixtures Against Cape Verde For Third Round Qualification

Super Eagles, yesterday, defeated the Lone Stars of Liberia 2-0 in an uninspiring away fixture to brighten their chances of qualification for the third round of the African FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers.

In the match played at Stade Ibn Batouta, Tangiers, Morocco, Nigeria scored two penalty kicks, the first by Victor Osimhen in the 15th minute and a second one by Captain Ahmed Musa in the 94th minute to ensure that the three-time African Champions go through to the next round of qualification with at least a draw against Cape Verde. The last match for the two teams is fixed for Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

Coach Gernot Rohr-led team, which deployed a 4-3-3 formation, was unsinspiring, as the midfielders failed to supply the attackers throughout the 90 minutes plus the extra four minutes the Tunisian referee, Youssef Essrayri, gave the teams.

The substitution of Alex Iwobi with Chidera Ejuke in the 62nd minute and the withdrawal of Kelechi Iheanacho for Captain Ahmed Musa in the 87th minute did not change the face of the game, as the Eagles played without focus.

In the other Group C game, Cape Verde suffered an early minute scare when Central African Republic’s Isaac Ngoma put the visitor ahead in the 11th minute of the match before Julio Tavares equalised for the hosts.

Cape Verde’s Stopira then put his country ahead in the 76th minutes to rekindle their hope of a qualification for the next round in the match against Nigeria on Tuesday.
