Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, wrapped up their pre-World Cup build-up with a 3–2 win over Paraguay in Casablanca on Tuesday, ending their training tour on a confident note ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The match, their 12th warm-up encounter, provided a strong test for Coach Bankole Olowookere’s side, who have now scored 50 goals and conceded just six during their preparatory campaign.
Nigeria took an early lead within two minutes when goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface delivered a precise long ball to captain Shakirat Moshood, who set up Mariam Yahaya for a composed finish over the advancing Paraguayan goalkeeper.
Paraguay levelled in the 15th minute after a defensive error by Christiana Sunday, but Yahaya restored Nigeria’s advantage shortly before halftime, capitalising on a defensive mix-up in the 44th minute. A minute later, she completed her hat-trick after a clever assist from Kaosarat Olanrewaju, giving the Flamingos a 3–1 lead at the break.
The South Americans pressed for a comeback in the second half, but Nigeria remained largely in control. Substitute goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu made a key save in the 69th minute to deny Paraguay a clear chance. A late defensive lapse allowed the opponents to pull one back, but the Flamingos held on for the win.
The team is now set to depart for Rabat on Wednesday to take up residence in the official FIFA tournament camp. Drawn in Group D, Nigeria will face Canada in their opening match on Sunday, 19 October, before taking on France and Samoa on 22 and 25 October, respectively.
