Insurance pip 3SC 1-0
Former champions, Enyimba of Aba, yesterday, defeated Akwa United by a lone goal to move to the third position in the four-week-old 2024/25 Nigerian Premier Football League.
The Peoples Elephant, who are fighting to reclaim the title they last won in the 2022/23 season, got the only goal of the match played at the Aba Township Stadium in the 74th minute of the encounter through Austin Onyemaechi.
Coming after their 0-2 loss to Rivers United, who are now coached by their former manager, Finidi George, the victory came as a big relief for the Yemi Olanrewaju-tutored side.
The loss, however, compounded Akwa United’s woes, who lost at home to Sunshine Stars of Akure. The defeat pushed Akwa United further down the ladder to the 16th position on the table.
In the other outstanding game played at the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, yesterday, Bendel Insurance needed a 94th-minute goal by Michael Enaruna to subdue visiting Shooting Stars of Ibadan.
Shooting Stars, which is fighting this term to finish above the fourth position that they got last season, held their own until four minutes into added time when the Benin Arsenals breached their guards for the win.
Today in Enugu, defending champions, Rangers International will host Bayelsa United in another rescheduled game of the nascent season.
The rescheduled games are some of the matches involving Enyimba and Rangers put on hold due to the teams’ involvement in CAF inter-club championships.
