ENYIMBA of Aba and Kano Pillars began their campaign in the 2015 CAF Champions League on a winning note with the “peoples Elephants’ beaten Buffles Du Borgou of Benin Republic 3-0 in Aba, while Pillars won 2-0 away to Al-Malakia of South Sudan.
At the Aba Township Stadium, Enyimba showed their intent as early as the seventh minute when Daniel Etor opened scores for the 2003, 2004 champions.
Nzube Anazemba, who had earlier lost a penalty, made it 2-0 in the 80th minute, before Peter Onyekachi, who was rated man-of-the0match by many fans at the stadium, made it 3-0 at the dot of 90 minutes.
Enyimba would have scored more goals but for the uneven surface, which often hampered their strikers’ movement and the homers’ penchant to play to the gallery.
But team coach, Kadiri Ikhana, is not worried that his lads could not make the scoreline reflect the balance of play.
He said: “This is our opening game of the competition and you should expect the boys to be nervous. We have started well and what is left is for us to finish this round comfortably.
“We will continue to work on the team until we get to that level everybody wants the team to be in.”
The second leg of the tie will come up in Benin Republic in a fortnight.
In South Sudan goals from Gambo Mohammed and Christian Obiozor Kano Pillars’ away win in their opening game of the CAF Champions League.
Speaking after the game against one of the newest teams in the competition, Pillars’ Coach, Okey Emordi, said, “it was a good game of football and the result I would say was satisfactory.
“It is just the first game of the competition, so it was nice seeing the players play as well as they did.”
Saturday’s victory is their first away win in the competition in four years, but Emordi says they are not getting carried away by the feat.
“We cannot afford to get carried away and I have already said that to the players and they understand. It was only our first game and not even the second leg.
“We know we still have a long way to go because the target is to get to the group stage and continue to make progress.
