Enyimba walk tight rope as Zamalek pick draw in Uyo
Enyimba’s hopes of earning their first win in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup was dashed in Uyo yesterday by Egypt’s Zamalek, who ran away with a 2-2 draw in the matchday two game.
Enyimba lost their opening game to another Egyptian team, Al Masry, last week in Alexandria and needed a win yesterday to return to reckoning in the four-team group.
But Zamalek had other ideas as they ran into a quick 2-0 lead to put Enyimba on the back foot. The Peoples Elephant, however, rallied their troops to even scores and begin search for the winner, which never came.
The draw gave Enyimba their first points in the mini-league stage of the competition, while Zamalek now have four points from two matches.
The home fans at the Uyo Stadium were stunned by goals from Seifeddine Jaziri in the 33rd minute and Omar Faraj on 41 minutes.
But Enyimba pulled a goal back in first half stoppage time through Ifeanyi Ihemekwele, before Ufere Chinedu equalised in the 57th minute.
Thereafter, Enyimba went out for the winner, but Zamalek showed they know how to kill a game by slowing down the tempo and denying the Nigerians any chance within their box.
Next, Enyimba will travel to Mozambique for a date with Black Bulls, while Zamalek will host Al Masry in an all-Egypt affair.
