The organisers of the Nigeria Pitch Awards have congratulated the Super Falcons on winning their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco. In a statement on Tuesday, Shina Philips, President of the Nigeria Pitch Awards, praised the team for their courage, resilience, and determination throughout the competition.
“Our girls showed the never-say-die attitude that Nigerians are globally recognised for,” Philips said, referring to the team’s comeback during the final against Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses. The Super Falcons overcame a two-goal deficit within the first 25 minutes to secure victory.
Philips noted that the team’s performance could serve as a source of inspiration for Nigerians, especially in difficult times, representing hope and unity.
He also congratulated President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians on the sporting achievement and urged continued support for the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation.
“We commend the President for backing both the NSC and NFF, who are working together to strengthen Nigeria’s national teams,” Philips said.
He added that the Super Falcons’ success could motivate other national teams to aim higher in continental and global tournaments, expressing confidence that the Super Eagles can win the World Cup in the future.
Philips also acknowledged the individual contributions of team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Both players were nominated for the Queen of the Pitch Award at the 11th Nigeria Pitch Awards, with Ajibade winning the accolade.
The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in WAFCON history, with 10 titles. At the recent tournament in Morocco, the team went undefeated in six matches, scoring 14 goals.
They won the first five editions of WAFCON, beginning with the inaugural tournament in Nigeria in 1998, and have since reclaimed the title multiple times, including in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.
The Nigeria Pitch Awards, which started in Calabar in 2013, have gained national recognition. Winners are selected through votes by more than 100 sports editors across Nigeria. The 12th edition of the awards is scheduled for December 2025.
