Oshoala, Babajide, Ihezuo score as Super Falcons begin WAFCON with win

Nigeria began their campaign at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 3-0 victory over Tunisia in a Group B match played on Sunday at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.

The Super Falcons, who are seeking a 10th continental title, took an early lead in the 4th minute through Asisat Oshoala. The forward capitalised on a free-kick delivered by Rinsola Babajide, with her effort deflecting off Ashleigh Plumptre before crossing the line.

Nigeria extended their advantage in the first minute of added time before the break. Babajide retrieved a loose clearance on the edge of the area, drove into the box, and scored from a tight angle. The goal was upheld after a brief VAR review.

The North Africans offered little in attack and failed to record a goal for the fifth consecutive WAFCON match. Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie remained largely untested throughout the game.

Nigeria added a third in the 84th minute when substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo was left unmarked in the box and converted a headed assist from Plumptre.

Earlier in the second half, Plumptre had a header ruled out for a foul on Tunisia’s goalkeeper, Soulaima Jebrani, while Halimatu Ayinde and Esther Okoronkwo also came close to scoring.

Tunisia appealed for a penalty midway through the second half after Salma Zemzem went down under a challenge from Nigeria defender Osinachi Ohale. However, following a VAR review, referee Suavis Iratunga determined Zemzem had committed an earlier foul.

With the result, Nigeria move to the top of Group B ahead of Algeria and Botswana, who were scheduled to meet later on Sunday. The Super Falcons will play Botswana in their next fixture on Thursday. Tunisia will take on Algeria in their second group game.
