The Amavubi of Rwanda are expected to arrive in Uyo on Wednesday, September 4, ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles, officials of the team have said.
Nigeria will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on September 6 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Rwanda, with eight points, are currently placed second behind South Africa (13 points), while Nigeria is fourth on seven points.
A win for the Super Eagles is essential as Nigeria hopes to narrow the gap, especially with a three-point, three-goal penalty dangling on the South Africans for fielding an ineligible player during one of the games against Lesotho early in the qualifying series.
Rwanda Coach, Adel Amrouche, announced his provisional team for the game against Nigeria this weekend, ahead of the matches against Nigeria and the Warriors of Zimbabwe.
The squad comprises three goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders, and nine strikers.
Nigeria’s chances of qualification for the World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico depend on winning the games against Rwanda next week, and South Africa, in Bloemfontein, on September 9, and hope that results elsewhere favour their ambition.
The Super Eagles also need these victories to stand a chance of qualifying for the inter-confederation play-off if they are unable to overhaul South Africa in Group C.
The inter-confederation play-off is a six-team qualification tournament held in one of the host countries, with one team from each of the six federations, except for UEFA, as well as an additional team from the federation of the host nations, which is CONCACAF in this instance.
The African representative will emerge from a contest featuring the four best runners-up from the continent’s nine groups, with the winner going into the inter-confederation play-offs.
