Spanish footballer dies on the pitch after collision

Jesus de Miguel

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has passed away after suffering a serious injury in a Segunda División match against FC Andorra on Monday night.

The 30-year-old Madrid-born striker suffered severe head and chest injuries after a heavy collision with the opponents’ goalkeeper, Jesus Owono, in the seventh minute of added time in a two-all home draw.

Jesus Owono, the 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper, was later sent off following the challenge on the striker.

Tenerife and Andorra were tied 2-2 deep into the seventh minute of added time when the incident happened.
Owono raced towards the middle of the pitch to clear a ball from the other half when his knee appeared to have collided with De Miguel.

His condition was described as ‘stable but serious’ on Monday following the incident, but the condition of the striker worsened, and he was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.
