Warri Wolves beat Wikki, crowned NNL Super 8 champions

Warri Wolves Football Club have emerged champions of the 2024 NNL Super 8 League after defeating Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi in a pulsating 3-2 encounter at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba.

The highly competitive final, played under a misty weather condition following heavy rains, attracted a crowd of football enthusiasts and dignitaries including Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme; President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau; NNL Board Chairman, George Aluo; top football administrators, and fans from across the country.

Warri Wolves took early control of the game with superior ball possession and a confident tactical display. The breakthrough came as early as the 9th minute when Yusuf Lateef, wearing jersey number 17, found the back of the net, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Riding on the momentum of the opener, Warri Wolves doubled their lead in the 21st minute through jersey number 31, before Lateef completed his brace in the 28th minute, making it 3-0 in less than half an hour.

Despite the early setback, Wikki Tourists refused to go down without a fight. Their persistence paid off just before halftime with a crucial goal that reduced the deficit to 3-1 at the break.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Wikki Tourists side dominate possession and press the Wolves’ defense relentlessly. Their effort yielded a second goal in the 59th minute, narrowing the scoreline to 3-2 and setting up a tense final half-hour.

The encounter, which produced four yellow cards, ended in high drama as supporters of Wikki Tourists invaded the pitch at the final whistle, protesting what they claimed was insufficient added time. The chaotic scene was brought under control by swift intervention from security operatives and Hausa-Fulani community leaders present at the stadium.

In his post-match remarks, Warri Wolves captain, Napoleon Aluma, commended both teams, stating, “We were well prepared, and we expected this victory. It was a tough match, but both teams played well.”

On his part, Wikki Tourists captain, Mohammed Idris, admitted their slow start cost them the match but praised his teammates for their fighting spirit.

With the win, Warri Wolves not only claim the NNL Super 8 title but also confirm their return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), marking a triumphant comeback after four years in the lower division.
