After the opening day of the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League last week, the ladies, will this afternoon, resume hostilities in a Midweek Premiership showdown.

One of the matches, which will catch the attention of many Nigerians is the game between host Heartland Queens and defending champion Edo Queens Heartland Queens return to the Dan Anyiam Stadium looking to recover from their narrow 1-0 loss to Ekiti Queens last week. In that match, a goal from Odunayo Olaleye handed the Ajao City side a defeat in Ado Ekiti. The result was a surprising one, given Heartland’s impressive Super Six qualification last season, while Ekiti Queens fought off relegation. Edo Queens started their title defense with a 5-0 win over Abia Angels in the season’s opening match at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium last week.

Today, Moses Aduku’s side will be looking to maintain their perfect start in Owerri. The Stephen Keshi Stadium will host the tie between Delta Queens and Benue Queens this afternoon and both teams will be looking for redemption after tough starts to the season. Delta Queens lost 1-0 to Bayelsa Queens, while Benue Queens were hammered 5-1 by FC Robo Queens.

The two teams will meet for the first time in the top flight match. Coach of Delta Queens, Peter Dedevbo told The Guardian yesterday that his side is in good shape for this tie. “We have put behind the 1-0 defeat to Bayelsa,” he said.

With talented players like former UEFA Women’s Champions League top scorer, Emueje Ogbiagbevha, leading their attack, Delta Queens will be hoping to put in a dominant performance in front of their home crowd today. For Benue Queens, a strong result in Asaba will be vital to bounce back after their heavy defeat.

The South-South derby between Ibom Angels and Bayelsa Queens, as well as the South-West derby between Remo Stars Ladies and Ekiti Queens are also on the card this afternoon.

Remo Stars Ladies secured an impressive 3-1 win over Confluence Queens in Anyigba last week, while Ekiti Queens managed a 1-0 victory over Heartland Queens. This encounter will be their third meeting in the top flight, with both sides winning their home fixtures last season.
