Joe Boy thanks sponsors for N1.5m prize
Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph, the national lightweight champion and winner of the cash prize for the best boxer at GOtv Boxing Night 9, has commended the sponsors for the support they are giving to boxing.
Joe Boy was adjudged by journalists as the best boxer at the event, which held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos, on Sunday, winning the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy and the award for an unprecedented third time.
He defeated Richard “Desert Warrior” Amefu of Ghana in an international lightweight challenge bout.
“GOtv has done well for Nigerian boxing. Without their support, boxing in Nigeria would have died. They are the only source of hope for Nigerian boxing and the cash prize they provide is a massive encouragement for boxers. We should not forget GOtv Boxing NextGen Search, which is discovering boxers and nurturing them. God will bless GOtv abundantly for what they are doing,” said Joe Boy.
The night also went swimmingly for Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, whose closely contested encounter with Ghana’s Raphael “Iron King” Kwabena King of Ghana ended in victory for him by split decision. So it was for Adewale “Masevex”, who knocked out reigning light heavyweight champion, Jude “Great Jude” Iloh, in their national challenge bout. Idowu “ID Cabasa” Okusote also knocked out Ekeng “Fighting Policeman” Henshaw to win the national cruiserweight title.
