Lagos Women Run draws over 8,000 athletes, fun runners

[FILE] The Lagos Women Run featured runners from across the world in a 10-kilometre race across the streets of the city.

Over 8,000 women, comprising professional athletes and avid runners, will participate in the eight Lagos Women Run on November 11, 2023, according to the organisers.
 
Speaking yesterday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, the convener, Tayo Popoola, said over 8,000 participants have registered for the race, including over 300 professional athletes, 10 clubs, as well as local elite athletes.
   
Popoola said following the success recorded in previous events, this year’s edition will focus on woman empowerment and support in various skills.
 
She said while the race has been used to identify talents, network with women and bring them together for positive purposes, this edition will focus on women empowerment, where they will learn skills to boost their trade and businesses.
 
Popoola said women have done well in their contributions to Lagos State, which is why the state government and organisers are using the race as a platform to recognise them.
 
She said the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has supported the race to make it bigger, especially in the cash prizes for the winners as well as the extension for winners .
 
Popoola said the winning category for both the open and veteran have been extended from 10 to 20.She said the main winner for the open will receive N1.5 million cash prize against the N1 million for the previous editions, while the veteran will get N500,000 as against the N300,000 for the previous editions.

She said the race will start at the TBS at 7:00 a.m., move through to Nitel and Ahmadu Bello Way all the way down to Teslim Balogun Stadium, noting that security agencies and medical teams would be on ground to render full support.
 
Also speaking on the race, the Technical Director, Lagos State Athletics Association (LSAA), Enefiok Udo-Obong, commended the organisers for creating a platform for women’s participation in sports.
 
He said LSAA has been moving to bring more young ladies to participate in athletics, which is a fundamental aspect of sports, adding that the goal is to have more girl/child in sporting activities in the country.Udo-Obong acknowledged that women are doing exceptionally well in the national teams and representing the country at international levels.
