Makinde relishes Nigeria Cup victory

Mike Makinde made history on Saturday by joining the prestigious class of Nigeria Cup winners. The honour came through his victory in the 25th edition of the Nigeria Cup; a weeklong competition put together to celebrate the nation’s Independence anniversary.

Relishing the outcome of the competition, the 11-handicap player said he never envisage winning the competition. But a net score 66 change the story for the high flying golfer as he defeated his closest rival Oluwaseun Faleye by three shots. Faleye shot 69-net to duck in the second position while Onyelukachukwu Obata with 70-net score defeated Fortune Odianosen who also shot 70-net score on countback.

Golf promoter; Remi Olukoya won the gross category for men while Osiregbemeh Egbakhume returned 80-gross to duck in the second position, leaving Sola Omilabu who carded 82-gross in the third position.

Akeem Lawal’s 83-gross helped him into the fourth place. He won on Countback.

But it was Makinde’s time and Makinde’s day. Beaming with smiles, Makinde said there’s no better way to celebrate the nations Independence anniversary than winning a coveted trophy like the Nigeria Cup, saying, “its double celebrations for me”.

“It has always been my dream to win a big tournament like this and I have achieved my dream. This is my greatest achievement so far. It is historical and I can never forget this day”, said the elated Makinde.

While congratulating the winners, Ikoyi Club 1938 Chairman, Demola Mumuney urged everyone present to continue to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and imbibe lessons learned from the game of golf.

In his remarks, Chairman, Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association, (IGCNA), owners of the Nigeria Cup, Felix Majekodunmi said the competition has come a long way adding that efforts are being made to continue to improve on the quality of the tournament.

The Nigeria Cup debuted in 1997 as a small tournament to celebrate the nations Independence anniversary and has grown to become one of the most sought after tournament in the Nigeria Golf Calendar.

The weeklong competition involved Kid golfers, Caddies, Ladies, Invited guests, Veterans, Professional and amateur golfers.
