The National Sport Lottery Trust Fund has presented equipment to 41 primary schools in Bayelsa State as part of the official launch of its intervention in sports in the South-South geopolitical zone.

Flagging off the initiative in Yenagoa, Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpoibiri, said the intervention was carefully designed by the Federal Government to support public schools, adding that it underscored the importance the government attached to sports development in public schools.

He said: “About 2,000 public primary schools have been selected for this programme across the federation and 41 benefiting schools are from Bayelsa, which is one of the highest in the country.

“We have three tiers of government, and these are public schools, therefore, the states and local governments should complement the efforts of the Federal Government and key into the programme to ensure that more schools benefit. The Federal Government will continue to support sports development in primary pupils to groom talents needed to win medals in future Olympic and other games.”
