2027: Ex-IGP Abba takes Senate campaign to grassroots, promises people-centred legislation

Former Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba

Former Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has taken his senatorial ambition to the grassroots in Jigawa State, promising to pursue legislation and policies that address the everyday challenges facing residents of Jigawa South-West.

Abba, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the district in the 2027 general elections, pledged the flag-off of his campaign in Gwaram, where he called for sustained democratic participation and effective representation of the people.

The former police chief said his ambition was driven by the need to contribute to the development of Jigawa State and Nigeria, stressing that elected representatives must translate the concerns of their constituents into practical laws and policies.

He pledged to use the legislative platform to advance initiatives capable of improving people’s welfare and addressing challenges confronting communities across the senatorial district.

“By God’s grace, we will continue to work towards these goals. When we get to the relevant institutions and legislative assemblies, we will sponsor and pursue laws and policies that serve the interests of our people and the nation,” he said.

Abba urged supporters to remain committed to the democratic process, emphasising the importance of perseverance, collective responsibility and active participation in building a society that responds to the needs of its citizens.

His message placed particular emphasis on the responsibilities of elected representatives, arguing that political representation should go beyond occupying public office to delivering meaningful benefits to the people.

The campaign flag-off in Gwaram also provided an opportunity for the former IGP to engage supporters and outline the direction of his political ambition as the contest for the Jigawa South-West senatorial seat gathers momentum.

From policing to legislative politics

Abba’s entry into the senatorial race marks a transition from a career in law enforcement to the pursuit of elective office.

Having served as Inspector-General of Police, he brings experience in policing, public administration and national security to a campaign that will require him to demonstrate how that background can translate into effective legislative representation.

However, the contest will ultimately test his ability to connect his experience with the priorities of voters, particularly in areas such as security, education, healthcare, agriculture and employment.

For residents of Jigawa South-West, the key question will be whether the promises made during the campaign can be translated into concrete interventions that improve livelihoods and expand access to public services.

The National Assembly provides lawmakers with opportunities to sponsor bills, scrutinise government spending, conduct oversight of public institutions and advocate projects and policies for their constituencies.

Abba’s pledge to pursue laws that serve the people’s interests therefore places the emphasis on how he intends to use those responsibilities if elected.

Security and development in focus

Given his background as a former police chief, security is likely to remain an important issue in assessing his public service credentials. Nevertheless, his campaign must also address the wider economic and social concerns affecting constituents.

Agriculture, a major source of livelihood for many rural communities, remains an important area in which legislative advocacy and effective oversight could influence access to support, infrastructure and market opportunities.

Education, healthcare and youth employment are also issues on which voters may seek specific commitments from candidates seeking to represent them.
