The maiden Prince Ned Nwoko/Delta Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) tennis championship will commence today at the Prince Ned Nwoko Resort in Asaba.

Chairman of the NUJ, Delta State Council, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu said the tournament was being bankrolled by the former House of Representatives member and would feature players from three clubs from Asaba and Warri.

Ikeogwu added that participants and officials for the tournament were expected to arrive yesterday at the resort for the event holding today.

The NUJ chairman said winners would be presented with cash prizes at the end of the event, which is aimed at promoting tennis in relation to other sports, particularly soccer.

He added that the event was also to popularise the sport among the youths in view of its economic viability and also to utilise the impressive facilities at the resort.

Ikeogwu said there would be an exhibition match involving veterans at the championship, adding that the youth would be mobilised to cultivate and engender their interest in the game.

According to him, the choice of tennis was on account of two factors that is its inherent viability and the necessity to popularise it among the Deltans.
