Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare was subjected to racist abuse by fans of his club KRC Genk in Belgium.

Genk confirmed the abuse in a statement on Monday.

Arokodare received the abuse after missing a penalty in Genk’s 3-0 home defeat to Club Brugge in a league game on Sunday.

The penalty miss angered some of the fans who vented their anger towards Arokodare on social media.

Reacting to the abuse, Genk condemned it and promised to track down the culprits.

“After the match against Club Brugge, Tolu received a series of racist reactions on social media,” Genk said in the statement.

“KRC Genk and everyone involved with the club condemn the reactions 100%. Racism has no place. Not in football stadiums, not on social media, nowhere.

“Unfortunately, racism is still deeply rooted in football and by extension in society as a whole. It is a shared responsibility to put a stop to this.

“As a club, we do everything we can to track down those responsible and report them to the police.”

Arokodare has scored eight goals, provided two assists in 27 league appearances this season.
