Team Nigeria’s athletics squad to the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded their pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen ahead of hitting the competition venue today.

In a message to Nigerians, yesterday, the squad, led by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Performance Director, Victor Okorie, described the Aberdeen camp as one of the best experienced by the country’s athletes in recent time, while thanking the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for giving them opportunity to train in a serene environment with all the facilities they needed for ultimate performance.

According to Okorie, “Our time in Aberdeen has been productive, inspiring, and invaluable. Since the Games officially commenced today, July 23, our athletes have remained focused, disciplined, and united by a common purpose: to represent Nigeria with honor, pride, and distinction on the world stage.

“On behalf of our athletes and the entire delegation, we express our sincere appreciation to the National Sports Commission for its unwavering support. We are especially grateful to the Chairman, Shehu Dikko, whose visionary leadership has been instrumental in our preparations, and to the Director General, Bukola Olopade, for his energy, accessibility, and relentless commitment. His leadership has inspired tremendous confidence throughout our camp.”

Okorie said that training at the Aberdeen camp “has been outstanding, and the atmosphere within the team is filled with unity, belief, determination, and hope.”

He added: “In just a few days, these exceptional athletes will step onto the track and field carrying not only the Green-White-Green flag, but also the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of over 240 million Nigerians. Millions across the globe will be watching, praying, and cheering as Team Nigeria strives for excellence and glory.”

“To our fellow Nigerians living across the United Kingdom and Europe, we warmly invite you to come out in large numbers to support Team Nigeria in Glasgow. Your presence, your voices, and your encouragement can make a tremendous difference. Together, let us create an atmosphere that reminds our athletes that an entire nation stands firmly behind them every step of the way.”

The United States-based AFN board member also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “for his continued support and commitment to the development of Nigerian sports and our athletes.”

Okorie reaffirmed the athletes’ determination “to compete with courage, integrity and excellence, and to make our great nation proud,” adding, “By the grace of God, Team Nigeria is ready.”
