Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onos Oborevwori, has congratulated Efetobor Apochi on his victory in the NABF Cruiserweight title bout against Cuba’s Dariel Duquesne.
Apochi, popularly known as “The Nigerian Pit Bull,” emerged the new NABF Cruiserweight Champion on March 27, 2026, after defeating Duquesne via majority decision (95-95, 96-94, 96-94) at the BiYu Arena in Houston, Texas. Returning to the ring after 13 months, the Nigerian boxer improved his record to 14-3 (13 KOs), claiming the vacant title from the previously undefeated Cuban.
Oborevwori described Apochi’s victory as a testament to Delta State’s sustained investment in sports development, highlighting the government’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent.
He noted that the triumph reflects the state’s belief in the power of sports as a vehicle for achieving international recognition.
“Delta State has invested significantly in sports development over the years, and Apochi’s achievement is a clear indication of the state’s deliberate efforts in this regard,” he said.
According to him, Apochi’s success serves as a source of inspiration not only to the Delta State Sports Commission but also to aspiring boxers across Nigeria.
“This win sends a strong message to young athletes that with dedication and hard work, greatness is attainable. Apochi’s story is one that inspires and motivates us all,” Oborevwori added.
He expressed confidence in Apochi’s continued success, offering prayers for his safety and progress in the sport.
“We pray that the Almighty God will continue to guide and protect him as he represents our state and country on the international stage,” he said.
Oborevwori also urged young boxers to remain focused and resilient in pursuing their dreams.
“To all young boxers, do not relent. Keep pushing and never give up on your dreams,” he advised.
He further stated that Apochi’s victory has boosted the morale of athletes within the commission and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting emerging talents.
“Apochi’s win has greatly lifted the spirit of our athletes and the commission. We are motivated to do even more to support them,” he said.
Oborevwori added that the achievement has further strengthened the commission’s resolve to deepen sports development in Delta State.
“With Apochi’s success, Delta State continues to be identified with excellence in sports. We remain committed to discovering and nurturing more talents like him. Delta State to the world,” he said in Asaba.
