A member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Department, Garba Lawal, has expressed excitement over the current forms of Super Eagles’ strikers, Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu.

Both strikers have been imperious in their forms for their respective clubs, Napoli and Racing Genk in Europe respectively, as the country prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next month.

Osimhen put up a star performance in continuation of his goal-scoring form for Napoli in Sunday’s Serie A clash against Cagliari. The Nigerian international scored a goal and provided another after being fouled, which Napoli converted to make it 2-0 from the resultant penalty kick.

Onuachu, on the other hand, also scored a hat trick for his club, Racing Genk, at the weekend.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Lawal, a utility player for the Super Eagles in his days, said both Osimhen and Onuachu should maintain their scoring form while also hoping that they wants don’t sustain any injury, which he said Nigerians should pray about going into the AFCON qualifier next month.

“We should pray for these players to be consistent in their newfound goal scoring form, which is good for them and also very important for the country. Nigerians should also pray for them not to have injuries for the AFCON qualifiers. We know consistency is key in football and we cannot afford to miss them for the qualifiers.

“In their clubs, fans would want to see them give 100 per cent performance week in, week out. God forbid if these players get some knocks that may result in serious injuries. That, we pray, should not happen to either of our two best strikers in Europe,” he said.

Lawal, said, however, that Nigerians shouldn’t be too elated with the scoring form of Osimhen and Onuachu as the season just started.

“The season is still very young in Europe and that is why it is too early to talk about their scoring form. Though it is good both of them are banging in goals now and they have been fantastic scoring them every week for the clubs,” he stated.
