Elephant Girls qualify for Zenith/NBBF Basketball League’s quarterfinals
FirstBank women’s basketball team, the Elephant Girls, took a big leap into achieving their dream at the weekend by beating Yenagoa-based Bayelsa Whales 57-32 to qualify for the quarterfinals of the ongoing Zenith/NBBF Women’s Basketball League at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos.
Led by Captain Theresa Joy Ebiega, the Lagos State-based team led from start to finish as they marched to the quarterfinals.
The Elephant Girls had earlier defeated Royal Aces of Abuja by 76 to 46 baskets and overpowered Abuja Titans in their second encounter by 70-45 baskets.
Speaking shortly after the match, Coach Taye Adeniyi restated the team’s resolve to come out tops in this year’s league, saying that his girls are ready to go all the way.
“We are willing and ready to give our all to erase the memory of our not too impressive runs last year,” she said.
The Elephant Girls are one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs with a history of successes on the continent. A win in Lagos will not only crown them as the 2024 Nigerian champions, but will also give them the opportunity to return to the continent.
