Esther Kolawole wins 62kg gold at Spanish Wrestling Grand Prix

Nigeria’s Esther Kolawole secured a gold medal in the women’s 62kg category at the 2025 Grand Prix of Spain, following a 10-0 victory by technical superiority over Jaffe Haylie of the United States in the final match held on Saturday.

Kolawole advanced to the final after winning her quarter-final bout against Spain’s Lydia Tourino, also by a 10-0 scoreline, and defeating Poland’s Alicja Nowosad 4-1 in the semi-final.

Reacting to her performance, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, commended her efforts and expressed confidence that the international exposure would be beneficial.

“I believe this experience will help shape her for future international competitions,” Igali said. “I’m truly impressed by her outing. If she keeps this up, Nigerians can expect more gold medals in the near future.”

Kolawole is expected to participate in the upcoming Ranking Series in Budapest, Hungary, from July 14 to 19.

The event forms part of her preparation for the 2025 World Wrestling Championship, which is scheduled to be held later this year in Croatia.

The Grand Prix of Spain, hosted in Madrid, began on Friday and is expected to conclude on Sunday. Wrestlers from various countries are competing across multiple weight categories.
