Over 120 schools drawn from across the state will feature in the season three of the annual Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship, tagged Opeifa Cup 2017.

Over 120 schools drawn from across the state will feature in the season three of the annual Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship, tagged Opeifa Cup 2017. It will hold from May 15 to 19, 2017 at the Rowe Park Sports Centre Yaba, Lagos.

Chairperson of the Lagos State Handball Association, Mrs. Adeola Opeifa said in Lagos yesterday that 67 schools participated at the maiden edition in 2015, while the number swelled to 100 during the second edition in 2016. She revealed that this year over 150 schools have already indicated their willingness to be part of the exercise despite having just a week to the commencement day.

As usual, the championship will hold in two categories, Junior and, while gift items including school bags, exercise books, t-shirts and other things have been set aside for the students, she said.

She commended the sponsor, Kayode Opeifa, who is also a patron of the Lagos State Handball Association and Mr. Sam Ocheho, a friend of the association, who has been sponsoring handball in the state.

Event sponsor, Kayode Opeifa said his aim is to ensure the game of handball strives not only in Lagos State but the South Western region and Nigeria at large, which, according to him, informed the decision to invite teams from outside Lagos to play alongside with Lagos teams.

He called on the Federal Government to invest in Nigerian Youths through sports, adding, however, that such investments must not be only in football but should encompass other sports.
