Over 3,000 athletes, 25 countries hunt for medals, in Abuja
Over 3,000 military personnel from 25 African countries have converged on Abuja, for the second edition of the African Military Games. This event aims to promote camaraderie, physical fitness, and regional collaboration among the continent’s armed forces.
The Games, which will begin with a grand opening ceremony, will feature 19 sporting events, including athletics, football, basketball, wrestling, shooting, and taekwondo.
Organised by the African Military Sports Organisation (OSMA) in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence, the event underscores the unifying power of sports.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the competition in Abuja, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the Games as a platform to foster cooperation and strengthen military ties across Africa. He said: “From November 18 to November 30, 2024, this event will provide a unique opportunity for our armed forces to showcase their skills, foster camaraderie among participants, and strengthen military cooperation and partnerships.”
General Musa also highlighted the cultural richness on display, with participating nations showcasing traditional dances, military drills, and a flypast by the Nigerian Air Force during the parade of nations.
Musa emphasised the significance of hosting the Games in Abuja, calling it a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to peace, security, and sports development. He noted that extensive preparations, including infrastructure and logistical arrangements, had been made to ensure a successful event, while calling on Nigerians to support the Games.
“We urge citizens and friends to come out en masse and support our armed forces. Let us show the hospitality for which Nigerians are known for. We are looking forward to a remarkable and unforgettable competition,” the CDS said.
Shedding some light on the competition, Air Vice Marshal Timothy Mapis, explained that the Games would involve military personnel from 25 countries, in addition to Nigeria, competing in 19 sporting events.
He said: “Most of the events will be held here, at the main bowl and parquet field. Obstacle crossing and shooting will not occur here in Abuja Stadium.
Shooting will be at the 177 Guards Battalion in Keffi, and obstacle crossing will be held at the Nigerian Military School in Giri. We invite all Nigerians to come and watch these Games.”
