Owusu, Francis are early kings at Sagamu Cup Championship

Ghanaian star, Emmanuel Owusu and Nigeria’s Christopher Francis took an early lead at the end of the first round of the inaugural Sagamu Cup Championship on Wednesday, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The championship holding at the magnificent Elephant Cement Golf Course, Sagamu, Ogun, will end tomorrow.Edwin Osuhor, the tournament’s Technical Director disclosed that Owusu and Francis shot a two under 69 in the first round to race to an early lead ahead of Ghana’s Vincent Torgah and Nigeria’s Francis Epe.

“Torgah – all the way winner of four out of the six tournaments so far of the 2019 African Tour season, was off to a slow start one stroke behind the joint leaders on one under par 70.“He was closely followed by Nigerian Francis Epe, winner of the just concluded South East Shootout Championship in June in Owerri, who also shot a one under par 70,” he said.

The President of the African Golf Tour, Emeka Okatta said the Sagamu Cup Championship was a four-round 72-par tournament.“It has a prize purse of $25,000 with the winner expected to pocket $4,000,”Okatta said.

Among the top golf greats gunning for the Sagamu Golf Cup title are reigning South East Shootout champion, Nigeria’s Epe; Ghanaian golfers, Torgah and his compatriot Emos Korbla, Zimbabwean Visitor Mapwanya and Sunday Olopade.

Okatta explained that organisers of the tour were desirous of taking the game of golf to all nooks and crannies of the country in a bid to create more awareness of the sport among Nigerians, hence the need to stage it in Ogun.The 2019 African Tour season is expected to climax with the tour championship at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja in December.
