Plateau United thrash Gombe 4-0 as Remo Stars edge Enyimba 1-0
Plateau United, yesterday, thrashed Gombe United 4-0 to climb to the second position in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) table, just as Heartland of Owerri gave their supporters a reason to celebrate with a 2-0 defeat of Abia Warriors of Umuahia.
Remo Stars had a hard fought 1-0 victory over defending champions, just as Lobi Stars maintained their position atop the league ladder with a 3-2 defeat of Rivers United.
Playing at the New Jos Township Stadium, Emmanuel Silas Nimrod was the hero for Plateau United as he netted thrice in the 68th, 72nd and 79th minutes to add to an earlier strike by Enejo.
The victory took the Jos-based team to 44 points, two behind Lobi Stars, who retained their top position courtesy of goals by Samuel Iorwuese (10th), Alao Danbani’s 43rd minute penalty and Kumanga Suur’s 58th minute goal.
The hard-fighting Rivers United replied through Ukeme Mitchel and Mark Gibson, but those were not enough to earn them any of the points.
In Ikenne, Remo Stars fought until the 71st minute when Olamilekan Adams got the goal that took them above Enyimba in the star match of Week 25. The win took them to the fourth position, while Enyimba, who were hitherto second on the log, dropped to the fifth spot.
Enugu Rangers, who drew 1-1 with Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium, are third on the log, although they are on the same 42 points with Remo Stars and Enyimba.
In other matches yesterday, Akwa United beat Bendel Insurance 3-1, Sunshine Stars defeated Katsina United 1-0, Niger Tornadoes defeated Sporting Lagos 1-0, while 3SC recorded an away victory over Doma United in Gombe.
