• Draw Is Not A Bad One, Says Igbinoba
Former international, Chidi Nwanu, has said that the qualification of the Super Eagles for the World Cup in Russia will depend on the quality of players available during the qualifiers scheduled to begin in October. Only group winners will qualify for the competition.
The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, released the draw for the Russia 2018, with Nigeria grouped alongside Africa’s highest seeded team, Algeria, its bitter rival, Cameroun, and also, a serious contender, Zambia.
Speaking with The Guardian on Friday, the United States ‘94 World Cup squad member said everything must be put in place to ensure that the country qualifies.
“Our qualification will depend on the calibre of players available to prosecute the matches, as well as the technical depth of the coaching crew.
“But then, it is not a matter of what I think as a person or what other opinions are. Everything depends on the football authorities and the coaching crew,” he said.
The former R.S.C. Anderlecht of Belgium player, however, noted that the nation would not have been in the same group with these strong teams, if the administrators had done the right thing. That is, if there are right administrators.
“Sometime ago, when we reacted to the blunder committed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in appointing Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles handler, we were called insane people. At that time, the same NFF supported him against the voice of reasoning, even though, it was glaring he did not have any coaching experience. He was not called to order.
“So, why would any reasonable person now want to mingle with these set of people running our football; people who never wore any of the national team shirts? The point I am making is that you don’t waste your precious time advising opportunists,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, former Golden Eaglet, Victor Igbinoba, has expressed confidence in the draws, saying, “the draw is not bad. But before I say anything, let us see who will be the new Super Eagles’ coach. It is only then that I can say whether we will qualify or not.”
