The first Golden League event organised by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) this year produced a spectacular race at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, at the weekend, with Samuel Ogazi coming in at 45.91 seconds to win the 400m men’s finals.

Ogazi, who is based in Kaduna, represented Dynamic Athletics Club at the event. AFN, which had an emergency extraordinary congress in Abuja, last Thursday, used the Golden League to test its athletes’ level of preparedness for the season, particularly the build up to the 2023 World Athletics Championships holding in Budapest, Hungary in August.

AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, told The Guardian, yesterday, that the Abuja leg of the Golden League was impressive.

“The athletes gave a good account of themselves, and we hope they will improve on their performances before our final Golden league in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State,” Onikeku stated.

While Ogazi won the men’s 400m, Victory Goday from Bayelsa State ran 11.56 seconds to win the women 100m event. The men 100m title was won by Gafar Audu of Making of Champions (MoC) in 10.39 seconds.

The next AFN Golden League is slated for the  Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State on June 7 and 8, while the Nest of Champions Stadium, Uyo, will stage the final event on June 23 and 24, 2023.

According to Onikeku, the All Nigerian Open Championship to pick the final squad for Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championship will hold at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State from July 6 to 9.

Meanwhile, AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, has urged athletes to improve on their performances to be part of Team Nigeria to Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships.
