Scrabble has been confirmed by the Local Organising  Committee (LOC) of the 2024 African Games as one of the demonstration sports at the Games slated to hold in Legon, Ghana, from March 8 to 23 next year.

According  the LOC, as a demonstration sport, scrabble would not be a medal awarding event .

The nod from the LOC to feature scrabble as a demonstration sport at the African Games came after a last minute push by the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) during the Dr. Winifred Awosika African Youth Scrabble Championship Trophy Tour in May.

The approval from the LOC, chaired by Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare, covers both the French and English-speaking scrabble playing countries.

PANASA President, Adekoyejo Adegbesan, who announced the news to the media, appreciated the efforts of Ghana’s Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, for making the inclusion of scrabble a reality.

Adegbesan also commended the Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG) President, Haruna Adamu and the Secretary, Christie Ashley, for their strategic contributions to the development.

He, however, revealed that PANASA would work with the World English Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) to get the sport into the Commonwealth Games.

The African Games, which was initially slated to hold this year, was postponed to 2024 for logistics reasons.
