The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has been recognised as the Grand Patron of the All Stars Football Association.
This recognition was announced at the conclusion of the Southwest zonal qualifications of the Veteran All Stars Football Tournament, which saw Ondo and Ogun States emerge as finalists.
The tournament, hosted by the Abeokuta All Stars Football Association, featured veteran teams from across the region, including Oyo and Ekiti states, in a display of skill, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of grassroots football.
Ogun State Veteran All Stars team clinched the top spot, while Ogun State, the host team, secured the second and final ticket available to the Southwest zone.
The Ogun State Government commended the Abeokuta All Stars Football Association for its consistent role in sports development and community engagement.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Wasiu Isiaka, represented the State Government and lauded the initiative as a commendable platform for active senior citizens and ex-footballers to contribute to national unity through sport.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s contribution and support towards the preparation and execution of the qualifiers were acknowledged by participants and officials at the event.
Several other distinguished individuals and sports supporters were also honoured for their steadfast support of the teams and the tournament.
The Chairman of the Abeokuta All Stars Football Association commended the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by all the participating teams and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting football as a tool for unity, physical well-being, and social inclusion among Nigeria’s veteran players.
Ogun and Ondo States will now represent the Southwest region at the National Veteran All Stars Championship in September.
