UNILAG moves to overtake UNIPORT as NUGA Games nears business end

With just two days to the end of the 26th NUGA Games held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the host school is scrambling to win more medals to overtake current leader, the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) and emerge winner of the competition.
 
At the squash finals, yesterday, UNILAG won both gold and silver in the men’s singles and silver in the lady’s singles, with the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) taking the gold in the women category.  

UNILAG won the mixed doubles gold and silver. The men and women’s doubles will hold today.
   
In the men’s hockey, UNIJOS beat UNIBEN, ABU defeated UNIAGRIC, while UNIMAID trashed Bayero University, while IBB University thrashed Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in the quarterfinals of tennis mixed doubles.
  
In women football, the University of Calabar beat LASU to advance to the semifinals, where it will meet the winner of the game between Rivers State University and the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). 

 
UNIJOS women’s volleyball team has advanced to the finals after beating the University of Nigeria (UNN) 3-0 in the semifinal match. In the men’s category, OAU beat ABU, UNILORIN trashed UNIJOS, UNILAG beat UNIBEN, while OAU defeated ABU.

UNIMAID’s male hockey team has also advanced to the finals after beating Bayero University, Kano 1-0.  
    
In canoe/rowing, which heats were held earlier yesterday, UNILORIN, UNILAG and NDU qualified for today’s 200m women’s event, while UNIPORT, UI and DELSU will do battle in the men’s category.
 

  
The quarterfinals of the football match between the University of Ibadan (U.I.) and UNILAG almost descended into violence when the former started throwing bottles, threatening to beat up fans and UNILAG athletes as well as spectators.

The police and other security agents had to be drafted to the scene for extra security. UNILAG won the game 1-0 to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals.
    
UNILAG’s women’s team on the other hand did not witness any drama as they easily dispatched their opponents, UNIJOS 3-1.

UNIPORT still leads the medals table with 60 medals, UNILAG second with 40 medals, while Nílé University is still in third place. 
 
The games will end on Saturday.
