We are not responsible for Kwara Sports Commission’s ban, says AFN

The last may not have been heard of the suspension placed on Kwara Sports Commission over its association with a banned coach. Yesterday, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) said the action was from the Nigeria Anti Doping Committee.

This is coming on the heels of a letter of apology sent to the AFN by Kwara State Sports Commission over the events that led to the ban of Kwara Athletics Association. The association apologised to the AFN over the presence in its team at the Golden League of coach Hammid Muritala, who was banned for 10 years for doping a minor, Fatimah Abdukarim.

“The NADC suspended Kwara AA and not the AFN,” AFN Secretary General, Rita Mosindi, told Mainlandmetronew.

“The AFN only communicated the decision of the NADC to the Kwara AA. The suspension was in line with World Anti-Doping rule 2.91, which prohibits association with a person serving a dope ban.”

She said that those accusing the AFN of suspending the Kwara AA without due process have totally missed the point.

“It was not in our hands. It is an issue for the NADC and WADA. Some people need to be thoroughly schooled in sports and doping regulations before they come out and misinform the public,” Mosindi stated.

Kwara Sports Commission boss, Bolakale Mogaji, had said that the Secretary of the Kwara AA and head coach have been queried over the presence of Coach Muri with state athletics team to the AFN Golden League in Benin City.

“As a former athlete, I know the implications of associating with a coach, who is under ban. We actually took all necessary actions that were expected from us, as far as this issue is concerned. I have all the letters to that effect,” Magaji said.
