Six teams drawn from across the country have been listed to compete for laurels at the second edition of the Wheelchair Basketball Championship, tagged the “President Cup.” The competition sponsored by the president of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Brig. General Emico Eruwa, will hold from December 20 to 22, 2019, at the indoor sports hall of the National Institute for Sports, National Stadium, Lagos.

Being an invitational tournament, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Aliyu O. Mohammed said all the six teams featuring in the exercise were invited based on merit.

While commending his president, Brig. Gen. Emico Eruwa, who is also the president of the Paralympic Committee Nigeria, for sponsoring the championship back-to-back for the second year running, Aliyu revealed that the event was not only aimed at keeping the athletes busy, but would also help to improve their performance in line with the international standard.

“It will also help them in mastering the newly introduced universal rules, which are already operational in other parts of the world,” he noted.

He stressed that the President’s Cup would help in getting Nigerian players adequately prepared for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games wheelchair basketball qualifiers.
