English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers have opened negotiations with Belgian side Genk over the signing of striker Tolu Arokodare, reports sportsview.co.uk.
The 24-year-old Nigerian has been identified as a priority target, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that talks are now underway on both the club and player side.
Arokodare finished last season as the top scorer in the Belgian Pro League, contributing 30 goals and assists across all competitions. His form has attracted interest across Europe, but Wolves have moved quickly to position themselves at the front of the queue.
The Premier League side are looking to strengthen their attack after the departure of Matheus Cunha earlier in the summer. Vitor Pereira has already welcomed Jhon Arias and Fer Lopez to Molineux but remains intent on adding further firepower before the window closes.
The situation has been complicated by uncertainty surrounding the future of Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Norwegian forward has been the subject of two rejected bids from Newcastle United, who are preparing a third offer worth £60 million.
Arokodare has already agreed personal terms with Wolves, according to sources close to the deal. Genk are expected to demand a significant fee for their top scorer, though talks remain at an early stage.
Wolves had also been exploring a move for Getafe forward Christantus Uche. A fee was agreed with the Spanish club, but the transfer stalled after difficulties in reaching an agreement with the player.
That impasse has pushed Arokodare to the top of Pereira’s list, with Wolves optimistic that progress can be made before deadline day. The move comes at a crucial moment for Wolves, who have lost their opening two league matches under Pereira.
A 4-0 home defeat to Manchester City highlighted the lack of cutting edge in attack. The club now hope Arokodare can provide the presence and productivity required to revive their season.
Meanwhile, Leeds United have swooped in for Uche, sources have told TEAMtalk, as Wolves hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of the Getafe forward.
Wolves looked to have beaten off strong interest from West Ham United, Leeds, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth to land the Getafe attacker in a £17.5million (€20.3m, $23.6m) deal.
According to TEAMtalk, Uche, who played as a centre-forward and in attacking midfield for Getafe last season, wants to head to the Premier League, with the Nigeria international’s expected arrival at Molineux potentially sparking Newcastle to step up their pursuit of Jorgen Strand Larsen.
However, Uche, 22, and his representatives have failed to agree on personal terms with the Black Country club. The deal is not dead in the water, at this stage, but his availability has now alerted a number of clubs.
