Discover the will of God for you -Part 44

Emeritus Prof. Mercy Olumide

Today this book of the law refers to the whole Bible—both OT and NT. Joshua1: 8: meditate therein day and night. “Meditate” (Hebhagah) means to read quietly or to talk to yourself as you think. It involves reflecting upon God’s words and ways and applying them to every area of your life (Ps 1:2; 63:6; 77:12; 143:5).

What Is Meditate? How Do You Meditate?
Read Psalm 1. Life’s two roads. The life of the faithful person is contrasted with the life of the faithless person.
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. 2:But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night,” (Ps 1:1,2).

“His delight is in the law.” Those who are blessed-by God not only turn from evil, but also build their lives around the instruction of the Lord. They genuinely take pleasure in God and His beauty, and pattern their lives according to His Word. What motivates their actions is love for God and His Word. As they draw life from God, they live fruit bearing lives (v.3).

“In His law he meditates day and night.” Those seeking to live under God’s blessing meditate on God’s law (i.e., His Word) in order to know God by revelation and to shape their thinking, attitudes and actions. They read the words of God, ponder over them and compare them with other words in the scriptures. When meditating on a passage in the Bible, questions such as these cross their minds:
• Is God’s Spirit applying this verse to my life and personal situation?
• Is there a promise here for me to claim?
•Is this passage revealing a particular sin I must strive to avoid?
• Is God issuing a command I must obey?
• Is my spirit in harmony with what the Holy Spirit is saying?
Is the passage expressing a truth about God, salvation, sin, the world or my personal obedience on which, I need to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit?

Joshua 1:8, prosperous, and … have good success. Those who know and follow God’s words and law will be prosperous and successful in that they possess the wisdom to live righteously and to achieve God’s goal for their lives (Ps 14:2; 119:99; Prov1: 3; 10:5).

The requirements for prosperity and success are:
1• be strong, courageous and diligent (vv.6-7).
2• make God’s word your authoritative guide for all beliefs and actions (v.7).
3• study and meditate daily on God’s word (v.8).
4 • determine to seek earnestly the presence of God throughout your life (vv.5, 9).
This message to Joshua provides us with a set of general principles for successful living.
