Fasting: A constant means of spiritual renewal

Chidi Okoroafor

Text: Mathew 5:6
Key Verse: Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” (KJV).

Fasting is a constant means of renewing yourself spiritually. It is a form of worship to God – offering your body to God as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. The discipline of fasting breaks you out of the world’s routine; humbles you; reminds you of your total dependency on God, and brings you back to your first love.

Fasting causes the roots of your relationship with Jesus to go deeper. God desires to speak to you, as one would speak to a friend. God called Abraham His friend because He had an intimate relationship with Abraham and spoke with him. When God came to judge the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah, He stopped by Abraham’s tent on the way. This act of God reveals a deeper relationship that exists between God and Abraham. Can you imagine looking outside one day and seeing God walking up to your front door with two angels? Abraham welcomed the three visitors and asked them to tarry, so that he could bring water to wash their feet and prepare a meal. The three visitors welcomed his invitation and stayed.

Abraham’s worship and faithfulness had fed God for many years, and suddenly he had the opportunity to feed him in the natural sense. When you feed God, He will tell you things that He may hide from others. The Bible says that after they ate, God told Abraham, he and Sarah would have a son in a year. He even shared with Abraham His plans for Sodom and Gomorrah.

When last did God dine with you, fellowship with you, and share with you deep secrets and plans for the future? If you have not heard God speak to you in a long time, stop everything and begin a fast. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Mathew 5:6). When you begin to develop a hunger for the deeper things of God, He will fill you.

It is not enough to be religious and attend church normal services. God desires to outdo Himself in your life. He desires to fellowship with you and share His deep secrets with you. Be hungry and desperate for God than you have ever had and you shall be filled. Break out from the religious rules, regulations and traditional thinking and break through to more His Presence, more of His power to turn situations around, more of His healing power, and more of His miracle-working power. Only Jesus satisfies the hungry soul.

We are living in an age, where people want power without seeking for God’s presence. In other words, they want gifts of the Spirit of God, but they don’t want the giver of the gifts. Everything you need is locked in the presence of God and you can break through into that presence, as you seek Him through fasting.

When you hunger for more of God, you will receive more. God will break all religious rules of man and cause His favour to come on your life. Fasting will break poverty from your life. As you give to God each time you fast, major blessings return to your life. Fasting, prayer and giving breaks the power of poverty from your life.

It is interesting that the three wisest men in the Old Testament – Joseph, Daniel, and Solomon – were also the three wealthiest men! Joseph was forced to fast in the prison. According to history, only the prisoner’s family members were allowed to bring them food, and his family was in another country. But after that season of his life, Joseph became fabulously wealthy and was put over all money of Egypt (Genesis 41:39-45). Solomon humbles himself in fasting and prayer, and God greatly increased his wealth and wisdom (1 Kings 3:10-13). Likewise, Daniel, who diligently sought God through fasting and prayer while in Babylonian captivity, was given wisdom over all others and greatly prospered in the days of Darius the king (Dan. 6:1-4).
Push traditions aside and fast and then you shall be filled.
Today’s Nugget: Fasting causes the roots of your relationship with Jesus to go deeper.
