The fear of God is a response of awe, worship and reverence for God’s holiness and grace. It is the basis for walking in His ways, serving Him and loving Him.
The greatest sin of this age is irreverence for the divine. People lack the fear of God. The feelings of independence, achievement, pride and self-centeredness have taken over this generation and we don’t reverence God any more. God expressed His feelings to His priests for their irreverence this way:
“The Lord of Heaven’s army says to the priests: ‘a son honours his father and a servant respects his master. If I am your father and master, where are the honour and respect I deserve? You have shown contempt for my name! “But you ask, ‘how have we ever shown contempt for your name?’ (Malachi 1:6 NLT).
In Deut.10:12, Moses told Israel what God expected of them: “And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Ironically, many of us often take God and his words for granted; we fear our fellow men more than God. Matthew 10:28 counsels us to fear God, rather than men, “And do not fear those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Isaiah adds his voice with this caution: “Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do, and don’t live in dread of what frightens them. Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble,” (Isaiah 8:12-13 NLT).
David demonstrated what the fear of God means when Uzzah was killed for touching the ark of God. David reacted to this sudden death this way: “David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, ‘how can the ark of the Lord come to me?”’ So, David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite,” (II Samuel 6:9-10 NKJV).
The Fear Of Our Awesome God Entails The Following:
Respect And Reverence: Fearing God includes respect, but it is more than that. It is a deep desire to obey and please God and to consider the need to give Him an account.
Recognition Of Dependence: It is an awareness of one’s “absolute dependence for existence on the undeserved mercy of Yahweh”.
Delight In God: It is delighting in God, while recognising that He should not be trifled with.
Trembling Before God: It is trembling at God in wonder and awe, and giving His Word and presence full attention.
Obedience: It is an inward force to carry out God’s will, no matter what.
Fear Of Sin: Understanding how much God hates sin and fear His judgment.
Refuge In God: It is taking refuge in God and drawing close to Him.
Love For God: Loving God so much that His frown is the greatest dread, and His smile is the greatest delight.
