“Awesome GOD” is a biblical expression that appears several times in the scriptures (Nehemiah 1:5; Nehemiah 9:32; Psalm 47:2, and Daniel 9:4). The phrase is used in the Old Testament to describe God or things related to Him. The phrase can be translated in several ways, including being “great” and “awe-inspiring” as in Deut.7:21, “You shall not be terrified of them; for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God, is among you,” (NKJV). The King James Version of the Bible uses the word, “Terrible” instead of “Awesome” as found in other versions.

God’s awesomeness is defined as His “immense power and unmatched attributes.” God’s character and deeds make him uniquely awesome. Job in his response in Chapter 9:4-12, declares how awesome the sovereign God is. God’s attributes distinguish Him from any other being or heavenly host. God stands out distinctly among all supernatural beings. His deeds are inimitable.

That God is awesome does not only mean that He is great, but it also means that He is great in His judgments. God is just in His judgment and loving in His ways and actions. Consider how King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem, looted and ravaged the temple, carried families into exile, threw the three Hebrew children into fire and was punished by God for seven years. But later on, God turned around and forgave him and restored him to his former position. That is how merciful and loving God is. God judges us for our sins, but also shows mercy. This is what makes Him awesome.

“God is awesome!” is an exclamation that expresses God’s exceptional nature. God is great! Nothing and no one can take that greatness away from Him. The scriptures confirm that the awesome God dwells among His people to embolden them against their enemies (Deut.4:32-40; 7:17-21). God is faithful, He keeps His promises, and no created being comes close to being as faithful.

Let us consider what the scriptures say about the awesomeness of God.
One, God is intrinsically awesome in majesty. Job 37:22 reads, “Out of the north comes golden splendor; God is clothed with awesome majesty.”
Two, God is great and awesome and keeps covenants with those who love him. Daniel said: “I prayed to the Lord my God and made confession, saying, “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments,” (Daniel 9:4).

Three, the awesome God dwells in our midst. Deut.7:21 reads: “You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God.”

Fourth, our awesome God is great in power, so great is His power that His enemies cringe before Him (Psalm 66:3).
Five, the awesome God does great things. He delivered Israel from Egypt (Psalm 66:5).

Six, His name is awesome. “He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name!” (Deut.28:58; Psalm 111:9). Seven, he is awesome in holiness. “Let them praise your great and awesome name!
Holy is he!” (Psalm 99:3).

Eight, he is awesome in glory. “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? (Exo.15:11).

Nine, He comes to us in awesome majesty (Job. 37:22).
Ten, by awesome deeds, he answers us. “By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas,” (Psalm 65:5).
