Growing in the knowledge of God is a process of maturing as a Christian. The first responsibility of a believer after receiving salvation is to pursue the knowledge of God. Christianity is knowledge driven and it is about knowledge of who God is. Who God is, His works and everything about Him has for ages been a subject of great interest to humans here on earth.
The question that begs for answer is: Who is God and could He be known? If knowing Him is possible, how can we know Him? The first thing you should know about God is that He is a Spirit. The Bible says in John 4:24, “God is a Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” In other words, He is not physical. He is not material. He does not have a body. He is invisible. He is a Spirit. God has revealed Himself as absolute, self-existent and independent, not relying on anyone or anything. In Exodus 3:14: “God said to Moses, “I Am Who I Am.”
How to increase in the knowledge of God is to find and search for the knowledge of God (Proverbs 2:1-5). You can know God through His Word, by reading and studying the Bible. In the New Testament, everything about God was expressed by Him through His Son, Jesus Christ whom Colossians 2:9 affirms thus: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
Knowing God now becomes easier through the knowledge of Jesus Christ who is the express image of God Himself (Hebrews 1:3). Knowing this, the Apostles of old desired to know more of Jesus Christ and also recommended same to us. Paul the Apostle, in almost all the epistles talked about the knowledge of Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 1:17, Apostle Paul prayed that God will give us revelation in the knowledge of Him and in Philippians 3:10, he personally desired that He may know God more.
It should be the desire of every child of God to increase in the knowledge of God. God, Himself, speaking in Hosea 6:6 said that He desire the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. Knowledge of God should be a progressive thing, for example in Philippians 3:10, Paul prayed that he will know God more, but in 2 Timothy 1:12, he said:“I know whom I have believed.” The access to the blessings of God is through the knowledge of God. The Bible in 2 Peter 1:3 says: “God has given unto us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of Him.” Anything you want to be, may be promotion, to have your child, job, among others is in God. Get God and you will find all things.
Stop looking for things, look for God. Job said in Job 42:5: “My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.” Job here was talking about the importance of knowing God for yourself beyond what you are taught. Move to a superior knowledge of God. Knowing God is the secret of doing exploits in the kingdom. The Bible said in Daniel 11:32 that those who know their God will do great exploits. The primary attack of the Devil is to keep us away from knowing God as there are many superior arguments that have arisen, today, targeted against the knowledge of God and to turn us away from the faith (2 Corinthians 10:5).
