Overcoming greed – Part 3

Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Ojo

Greed is a parasite that kills gradually. The way out of greediness is very easy as it was stated in the scripture. “O man of God, flee these things…” It is require to run away from material things and the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10). Money is very essential in life but integrity is more valuable. Again, determine to follow after righteousness. To be righteous is to be in right stand with God. In your dealing with people around you, in rendering your service in the office and public place, let this fruit of the spirit live in you. “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness…” (2 Tim. 2:22). Pant after doing what is right in the presence of God and man. Pursuing of righteousness should be an ongoing journey of life. It connotes fixing your eyes on Jesus and doing His will.

The next ingredient to overcome greed is determination to be godly. “follow after godliness” If Godliness is your watch word, you shall totally be free from the grip of greediness. The text of your Spirituality is when you have access to free money and you did not steal. Godliness leads to personal discipline in all ramifications. Develop the ability to build on your integrity when handling business and public funds. Noah was a righteous man living amidst a corrupt world (Gen. 6:5).

Overcome greed by faith in the living God. If what lead majority to greediness is the fear of future; start building your faith in the living God for His prosperity. “The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich and he adds no sorrow with it” (Prov. 10:22). To have faith is to put all our trust in Him. The Israelite left Egypt and exhausted all their foods in the wilderness, they cried unto Moses and Moses cried unto God. Manna was provided and water was supplied. When they allow greed to overcome and gathered without waiting on God, before the follow day, Manna became rotting. Greed leads to sorrow and regret. But trusting God leads to blessings and testimonies. There was temptation of hunger for Jesus and he eventually overcame the temptation of provision (Luke 4:1-13). Jesus endured hunger and snob the bread from devil. Greed is that bread that cannot last. The word of God is faith that we profess.

Finally, you can overcome greed through love. “Love is kind…It is not self seeking” (1 Cor. 13:4-5). Selfish ambition is the root of greediness. But if you are possessed with the Spirit of love, you will focus on others than self. Your ambition in life would focus on how to bless humanity. As you are going in the journey of life, kindly love your God with all your heart and love your neigbour as yourself.
